Lift Stations

By: Skokie Plumber

Lift stations are an important component of flood control system. Very often houses are built at lower elevation, elevation which is lower with respect to the main drain lines. It is a known fact that drainage depends upon gravity. This is to say that the drainage systems in the city are so designed that the sewage from the domestic drain lines empty into the city’s mail drainage line. But when houses are built at an elevation lower than the main drainage line then it becomes impossible for the sewage to flow into the city’s main line and more often than not it flows back into the house thus flooding it.

For flood control and flood prevention under such circumstances lift stations are used. Lift stations are special mechanical devices that collect the sewage in a pump basin and pump it up so as to enable it to flow into the main drainage system of the city. This prevents the backflow of sewage into the house.

Technically and traditionally, lift stations have been used in commercial buildings and industrial set ups to lift the wastage up to the destination of drainage. But nowadays these are finding huge applications as an integral part of the plumbing and drainage system of a house, especially the one that is located at an elevation lower than the main drainage lines of the city.

Many a time the municipal corporation of a city or village has to incorporate lift stations as an integral part of the overall drainage system because of the undulating nature of the terrain. Houses are built at varying elevations and to collect sewage from houses built on lower elevations and also the rainwater that has accumulated there, lift stations are widely used. Since they form such an important part of the flood control system, it is very essential that they be of superior quality, possess operational simplicity and made up of reliable and warranted parts.

Parks’ flood control system makes effective use of lift stations in order to prevent domestic flooding and flooding in the neighbourhood. The lift stations manufactured by the company are very reliable and effective and are so engineered that they can be installed only by the plumbing engineers at Parks’ Plumbing and Sewer Inc. The famous television show Ask This Old House had run a full feature on the effectiveness of the plumbing technology and flood control system of Parks’ when they had successfully solved a residential flooding problem happening in the North Chicago area.

Though lift stations have been proved to be very effective in solving the drainage woes of houses situated in low lying area, one obvious disadvantage is that the lift stations have to be operational 24 hours a day. Even if they stop functioning for an hour, the sewage will back flow into the house causing domestic flooding. This means that the method is energy intensive as a constant supply of electricity and power has to be there for lift stations to be operational round the clock. Park’s Plumbing and Sewer, Inc. also provides battery backup systems to insure continuous power for your lift station.
