Pink Ribbon Deceptions.

By: Karen Armitage

Some cosmetic companies support Breast Cancer Awareness while including dangerous chemicals in their products.

.
There are some major sponsors among the skin care and cosmetics industry who support Breast Cancer research and awareness. A few even offer gifts of their products to women recovering from the disease.
Great news! … Bring it on….
Except …
…..while these companies adorn their products with Pink Ribbons and many offer a percentage of profits to the cause, many of them also include chemicals in their products.
There are several chemical ingredients that may be cause for concern and quite a few that could be contaminated with carcinogens during manufacture.

Were you aware that some chemicals in skin care products have shown to be hazardous to laboratory animals?
It seems that the self-regulated cosmetic industry cares little about the results from research.

In California, US, in 2005, Senator Carol Migden sponsored a bill called the California Safe Cosmetics Act.
This bill would mean cosmetic companies who used chemicals in their products that had been linked to cancer or birth defects were obliged to inform the state.

The lobbyists for the cosmetic industry, led by the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) arrived on mass at the capitol.

At legislative hearings, companies including Johnson & Johnson, Mary Kay, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder and Neutrogena testified against the bill.

State records show Proctor and Gamble – manufactures of Max Factor, Cover Girl and SK II – paid lobbyists from Sacramento more than $250,000 and the CTFA spent a half a million dollars to oppose this bill and other environmental health legislation in California. 1

Let’s make it clear …
…. They weren’t required to remove the chemicals …
… just notify the state and thus consumers, of their inclusion in the products people use on their bodies every day!

I want to know that if there is the smallest amount of evidence regarding chemicals linked breast cancer, why isn’t the focus on eliminating these from daily life?

There are more than 200 chemicals that have shown to cause breast cancer in animals according to research from The Silent Spring Institute in May 2007.2
These chemicals include: - pesticides, industrial solvents, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic ingredients, hormones and dyes.

If seems more influence is placed on detection rather than prevention. If this disease is preventable, surely that is where the focus should be.
At the turn of the century 1 in 20 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Now that figure is more like 1 in 8.
It can’t be a coincidence that the increasing number of chemicals we are exposed to is not linked to the increase in breast cancer rates.
These increases parallel the increase in chemical manufacturing since WWII. They accumulate in the body and can remain for years if not decades.

Next time the Breast Cancer Awareness month rolls around and all the hype abounds, take a moment to reflect on the products you use and select for your family. Choose wisely and avoid chemical laden ‘Pink Washed’ products.
