Steel Buildings: A Wise Alternative

By: Audrey Cross

Because of their quality, durability and cost efficiency, steel buildings have become the popular alternative to more conventional wood frame structures and construction practices. Additionally, because of the many and diverse advantages that they offer, consumers and businesses alike have found them to be perfectly suited to a wide range of needs. With the benefits of using steel as a primary building material, as well as the flexibility that metal buildings offer to their owners, it is little wonder that they are quickly becoming one of the most popular choices for gyms, schools, rehearsal spaces, churches, barns, stables, riding arenas, and both small and large businesses.

One principal advantage of having steel as a primary material in building construction is its strength. Because of steel’s sturdiness over other, more conventional materials, along with its ability to last longer and age better, it aids greatly in creating structures that are hard-wearing and more resilient than buildings made from two-by-fours and particle board. Moreover, steel buildings are flame retardant and much less likely to be damaged or destroyed from fire, unlike their wooden counterparts.

Steel structures are also much less costly to build and to maintain. Because many of the components that make up a steel building are prefabricated, delivered onsite ready to be installed, the timeframe for erecting the structure is markedly much less than other types of buildings; when the build time is less, far less money is spent towards paying the architect and crew that assemble the building. Also, because is has been proven to insurance companies that steel structures are durable and far less likely to sustain damage from fire and weather, the cost of covering them is greatly reduced. Finally, steel buildings are economical due to their design: most steel buildings are intended to be added on to and expanded, therefore changes done to them take much less time, work, and alteration. Furthermore, because of the wide availability of materials, the expansions done will always match seamlessly, making for a building that is both attractive and easily molded for its ever-changing uses.

Due to the adaptability of steel buildings to a wide variety of uses, many have chosen them for their ability to comply with the different needs that they might have. As the designs of steel buildings have continually evolved, they are now able to resemble more classical structures by utilizing facades of glass, wood and even stone—making a much more aesthetically pleasing building instead of a structure whose appearance is determined solely by utilitarian purposes. Additionally, most manufacturers offer a number of color choices allowing the purchaser to choose different color for the walls, roof and trim.

Added together, the resilience, efficiency and adaptability of steel buildings make them the most sought after, and very attractive, option compared to brick, wood or cinderblock structures. They require markedly less time to build, a much smaller amount of basic maintenance, and can meet the needs of a wide range of users, making them well suited for everything from industrial applications to small organizations.
