Val Thorens: The Ski Resort beyond the Clouds

By: Robert Melkonyan

The Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in all of Europe. This means that you will be skiing beyond the clouds. Most of the slopes in Val Thorens face the north, and with this ski resort's elevation, exceptional snow is guaranteed all year round.

Exciting runs for intermediate and advanced skiers

Val Thorens, which was established in the 1970s as a ski resort, is easily the favorite base of many experienced skiers when they wanted to tour the Three Valleys or, as the French calls it, the Trois Vallees. The other valleys are Courchevel and Méribel. In Val Thorens, there are many easy ski runs for beginners, such as those at Saint Martin. They can certainly master their turns and jumps. However, the majority of the ski terrain of the Trois Vallees, especially around Val Thorens, is for the intermediate and expert skiers.

In fact, some advanced skiers believe that this ski resort is the definitive place to separate the highly skilled skiers from the cursorily interested ones. Ski touring from La Masse to the Cime Caron, the skiers will find exciting steeps, amazing powder, and breathtaking isolation. It is just the human skier against the elements.

Great recreational activities surrounding beautiful valleys

Aside from skiing, there other winter activities that tourists can do in and around the Val Thorens ski resort. The tourists can enjoy an exciting alternative called snowboarding. If the tourists get a lot of thrill from heights and will love an aerial view of the Three Valleys, they can join parasailing or riding in a micro-light aircraft. And if the tourists love speed on a machine, they can go snowmobiling. Besides these winter sports, there are other sports that do not involve lots of ice. There are courts for tennis, squash, and roller hockey. There are facilities for indoor swimming, Jacuzzi, sauna and massage, and golf simulation. And most surprising of all, there are video arcades. This makes the Val Thorens more than a simple ski resort.

History and culture for skiers at night

Visitors at Val Thorens are also interested in knowing more about the town's history. After all, this area in Europe has been settled since 2000 BC. By day, visitors can find evidences of the existence of the Iron Age, amidst the numerous hotels, restaurants, and ski schools. But at night, the relaxing mountain atmosphere changes to a faster and livelier rhythm. The après skis in Val Thorens are famous. There are live bands, karaoke nights, and bars such as the Frog and the Roastbeef and the Le Saloon. Partying happens at the Croisette and at the Saint Martin. And fine dining can be experienced at the L'Oxalys, the Bergerie, and the Fitzroy Hotel.

The accommodations at Val Thorens ski resort are found around the downtown area. Here, visitors will enjoy the warm hospitality of the French and the comforts of home. There are numerous hotels, chalets, and apartments. From these accommodations, the skiers can use any of the lifts, such as chairs, gondolas, and bubble lifts, to reach the ski runs.
