What You Should Know About Depression Cure - Discover Topics

By: Nathan Knightley

There are many different forms of depression. Many Americans are affected by depression and they don't even know it or they are not willing to accept it. Depression afflicts about 14 million Americans. Fewer than 4.7 million of those, about 1/3, will seek medical help. Why is this the case? Mental illness is a scary concept, and that's where depression has been filed. No one wants to be classified with that label. People who suffered from mental illness were, at one time in history, ridiculed by society. It was common to lock away people in facilities for the mentally ill when they exhibited signs of depression. Times have changed now, thank goodness. However, old stereotypes have not. This motivates many people to hide their condition from others or even from themselves.

Depression is caused by many factors. It isn't easy to diagnose. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Depression can stem from drug or alcohol abuse, or even from simple everyday stress. These elements and more can lead to depression. So what are some of the treatments and cures available for those that are inflicted? Just as there are many factors that can cause depression-there are many options to cure it as well. Which option is the best for someone who suffers with depression may be dependent on each individual on a case-to-case basis

Many claim they have a cure for depression. A cure for depression is realistic when safe and effective treatments are considered. A doctor looks at a number of factors to determine which combination of options to apply. Is there evidence to show that the option works to treat depression? If it is medication, herbal or prescription, does it have the proven amount of ingredients to induce a positive result? Have high quality control standards been used when accepting the method? Let's examine some of the more popular cures.

To treat many forms of depression doctors have typically prescribed a combination of drugs and psychotherapy. To treat depression a typical type of drug recommended is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI. In 1988 Prozac was first used and today it is one of the most popular. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that followed it. All have been proven to be effective. However, prescription drugs are expensive and offer many side effects. Becoming more common are natural treatments. A popular herbal cure is St. Johns Wort extract. To be effective it must contain around 3-5% hyperforin. It's success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. As important as it is to find a cure-it is impossible to do so if those who suffer do not seek it. Seek medical care at once if you or a loved one suffer from depression.
