Why Adult Networks Ignore the Adult Industry

By: Tom West

One of the more popular ways to meet the running costs of a Internet site is to place online ads in a featured situation on every webpage. Web managers can quickly and easily add an ad space to their website and start realizing income from each sale resulting from Internet users who click their advertisements, or even better, be paid for every single click. It may however be problematic, if you are an adult industry site owner you may find it tough to get an advertisement provider that accepts adult Internet sites.

This prissy rejection of the adult market, is contrary to changes in main street media firms in the recent past. Favorite entertainment shows are beginning to show more insights into the adult web industry. E! entertainments “The Girls Next Door” shows the daily life of Hugh Hefners existing girlfriends and “Family Business” is fly-on-the-wall diary of Adam Glasser who runs a flourishing adult concern. On the big screen Kevin Smiths very recent film “Zack and Miri…” showed two friends making an adult picture and pulled in $40m worldwide. The adult industry has gone mainstream but most online advertizing companies have yet to embrace the change.

Some web advertising and affiliate marketing networks are afraid that cooperating with the adult market will endanger their relationships with conventional merchants. As an example Ategrity, ShareaSale, Federated Media, DarkBlue and Premium Network say in their conditions that they do not work with Adult Companies. The fact is that a few mainstream advertisers have minor concerns about the adult business, but the majority either are not concerned, or wouldn’t ask the question in the first place. Forecasts for adult industry earnings have been pegged as high as $13bn (AVN, 2005) and many a CEO would lose their position if shareholders knew just how much extra income was being discarded.

The main consideration to letting in Adult sites is control. By fully vetting every internet site that applies to join to your network you are able to make shure that adult advertisings only ever shows on adult sites. Frankly, if your ad network is not able to control the quality and subject matter of every site they work with then you need to ask some deeper questions. Who is to say that they are not working with adult sites at the moment if they fail to control them?
