Why Plus Size Women Clothing is Important in America

By: Phoenix Delray

Many people tend to shrug off the plus size women clothing industry as a fringe segment of the market, but this is absolutely not the case. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that more than 62 percent of women in America were likely to be obese or overweight between the years 1999 and 2002. This means that for every one hundred women, more than half are likely to be in need of plus size women clothing.

This little statistic has helped to propel the plus size women clothing industry to the larger than life size that it is currently enjoying. According to Mintel, the plus size women clothing market in 2004 brought in nearly $32 billion. $32 billion is a huge number, eclipsing many other high profile industries.

Another reason to stand up and take notice of the plus size women clothing is because there does not seem to be any slow down in product sales. In the last five years, the plus size women clothing market has grown by nearly as high as 50 percent. Those kinds of numbers are huge! Also, the stigma associated with being overweight is not as prevalent as it used to be. In the past, larger women would be embarrassed of their size, choosing to wear unflattering muumuus instead of embracing their curves with more fashionable tailored clothes.

Like many other parts of the fashion industry, plus size women clothing is continually evolving and reinventing itself to stay current with the latest trends. Fashion forward women who are a little hefty like to stay abreast of these types of trends, keeping them going back to stores like Deb Plus, Lane Bryant and Fashion Bug Plus for some of the hippest plus size women clothing around.

What more and more people are slowly starting to realize is that there is no shame in wearing plus size women clothing. Now, it is more common to find women who are a bit overweight than it is to find fit people with flat stomachs and skinny ankles. With famous people like Cameron Manheim, Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie ODonnell leading the big is beautiful, too charge, the plus size women clothing does not seem to be going away any time soon. Even advertisers are getting into the mix, with companies like Dove having a campaign featuring real women and this includes those who belong in the plus size category.
